"It can happen to anyone."

"By every measure that we define success in this country, this guy had it: great-looking guy, well-educated, great career, plenty of money, beautiful, loving wife, beautiful children, great house. He had everything. He's a drug addict, and he couldn't get help, and he's dead ... It can happen to ANYONE. And so, we need to start treating people in this country, not jailing them. We need to give them the tools they need to recover because every life is precious ... We have to stop judging and start giving them the tools they need to get better."

Two years ago, while on the campaign trail (don't worry--no politics just yet), Chris Christie spoke to voters in New Hampshire about addiction. The story of Christie's close friend is one of the most powerful stories of addiction I have heard. It is a reminder that this disease knows no boundaries. It is also a message to all of us to consider how we treat those with addiction vs. those with other chronic illnesses.

I invite you to watch and reflect on your own perceptions of addiction. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below and to share this message on your social media platforms.
